Why is Rhinitis in Autumn common? Know what Ayurveda has to say!
Hay fever and Rhinitis are often confused as two different conditions. But in reality, it is the same respiratory disorder. If the word rhinitis is broken down into two, then we can have terms “Rhin” and “itis”, where Rhin represents the nose, and it stands for inflammation.
Rhinitis Meaning
As the name itself clarifies, it is a respiratory disorder
that mainly affects the nose. During the condition, the mucus membrane around
the nose becomes inflamed and irritated. As a result, the patient experiences
issues such as frequent sneezing, either blocked or runny nose, snoring, and
difficulty breathing through the nostrils.
Thus the most simple rhinitis definition is- a respiratory
concern affecting mucus membranes in the rose and is mainly induced by
bacterial infections, allergic reactions, hormonal imbalance, or poor immune
system.
Relation between rhinitis and autumn
Rhinitis has nothing to do with the season as it is a
non-season-specific respiratory issue that can occur anytime throughout the
whole year. But still, the cases of rhinitis are seen the most during autumn.
Know why?
The Autumn season is called “Sharad ritu” in India which
comes between the summer and the winter. During this time period, transitions
are being seen such as gastric fall in temperature, pollen being in the air
excessively, dust mites and insects seen commonly, and so on.
All these can contribute to the development of rhinitis
because these are some of the common allergens/triggers that sometimes may
enter through our nasal passages and become responsible for developing allergic
rhinitis symptoms, or similar respiratory conditions.
Which age group is affected by rhinitis, the most?
Rhinitis is seen the most in children and young adults of
the age of 20 years or more. But this does not mean it can not affect adults or
old age people. In fact, depending upon the body’s own immune power, past
medical history, and exposure to allergens, this respiratory disease can affect
anyone without any discrimination of age and gender.
Rhinitis seen in children, teens, and young adults is just
the prevalent prevalence as their immune system is comparatively low, and they
are exposed to external allergens, the most while playing outside.
Causes and Symptoms:
Rhinitis Symptoms :- Rhinitis Causes:
1. Runny, stuffy or blocked nose :- Viral
infections
2. Frequent sneezing :- Exposure to allergens/triggers
3. Difficult breathing via nostrils :- Environmental changes
4. Itchy throat and eyes :- Excessive smoking
or alcohol
5. Snoring :- Any accompanying respiratory
disease like asthma
6. Tiredness :- Excessive medications
7. Fatigue :- Hormonal fluctuations
Types of rhinitis:
There could be various types of rhinitis if we classify them
based on their causative factors. But for better understanding, they have been
mainly classified into 2, namely; Allergic rhinitis, and Non-allergic rhinitis.

their difference, read: Difference between Allergic and Non-allergic rhinitis-

Ayurvedic Perspective
In Ayurvedic textbooks, this disease is called “Pratishyaya
roga” and the Vata-Kapha dosha imbalance in the body is considered the prime
factor responsible for it, where virudha ahaara (unhealthy diet), Mansik tanaav
(distress), and exposure to allergens/triggers acts as contributory factors in
the development of this respiratory concern.
Rhinitis Ayurvedic Management
Not only the explanation but also a long list containing
multiple natural measures are available in Ayurveda that help a lot to treat,
manage, and even cure rhinitis. It mainly includes:
1.Use herbs
In Ayurvedic treatment for any type of disease, the usage of
herbs is involved. Depending upon the severity and body type of each patient,
different herbs, their varying dosage, and the mode of consumption are
suggested by the Ayurveda practitioners or doctors.
Guduchi, Neem, Trikatu, Tulsi, Punarnava, Pipali, Adraka,
Sitophaladi, Mulethi, and Lavang are some rhin-friendly herbs that are commonly
suggested to the patients either via oral consumption, herbal steam, or tea.
2.Avoid exposure/contact
It is highly advised to stay away from anything that makes
your symptoms worse. Irritating fumes, tobacco smoke, pet dander, pollen during
harvest season, aerosol sprays, air pollution, cold temperatures, and humidity
can be significant allergens and triggers for rhinitis.
3.Nasal wash
Rinsing out your nose with homemade saltwater (saline), or
lukewarm herbal water can help a lot in managing rhinitis. Firstly, it helps to
reduce nasal path inflammation, and additionally, it will also help to soothe
the irritation, and soreness caused by Pratishyaya roga, commonly called
rhinitis.
4.Sip liquids/fluids more
Try sipping more fluids either in the form of normal water,
juices, smoothies, soups, or herbal teas in order to help loosen the mucus in
your nose. It will not only help to lose the mucus but will also prevent its
further production.
5.Timely medications
Well, nasal corticosteroid sprays and antihistamines can
help treat allergic rhinitis, but these cannot be considered the permanent
solution. Ayurvedic medicines for rhinitis have shown very positive results
among patients as these are prepared using only herbs, spices, and other
natural ingredients that contain no side-effects, and yield only promising
results.
Just take them on time, as per the doctor’s suggested dosage
and manner for a speedy recovery.
