No Lump, No Pain, No Warning: 7 Breast Cancer Signs Women Are Still Ignoring

No Lump, No Pain, No Warning: 7 Breast Cancer Signs Women Are Still Ignoring

Do you also picture a lump whenever you hear “breast cancer”? This is because a lump is one of the best-known warning signs of breast cancer. But lumps alone doesn’t signify the risk of breast cancer. If someone reports any sort of change in nipple, skin, or breasts, it can be early signs of breast cancer. There are a few cases when there are no noticeable symptoms at all. Hence, waiting for a lump before seeking professional advice can give women a false sense of safety.

The awareness around breast cancer becomes even more important with growing breast cancer cases in India. India recorded an estimated 192,020 new breast cancer cases among women in 2022 as per International Agency for Research. Breast cancer was the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Indian women that year, making up 26.6% of all new cancer cases in women.

So what should women actually watch for when it comes to identifying the risks of breast cancer? Let’s find out!

1. A change in breast size or shape

Most of the women have breasts that are slightly different from each other in shape, size, and position. The major causes behind these changes include genetics, puberty, breastfeeding, and hormones. As long as you have a minor difference, it is completely normal.

But if a rapid asymmetry, new lump or any sudden change without any reason is reported, then you should immediately consult with a doctor. This is because breast cancer can sometimes cause changes and swelling in the shape of the breast even where there is no obvious lump.

2. Skin that suddenly looks different

It is alarming if you are experiencing thickening, scaling, swelling, darkening, redness, puckering, and dimpling around the nipple on the breast. peau d’orange is the term when skin starts looking like an orange peel. This generally happens when a person has the chances of inflammatory cancer.

Unlike common breast cancer, it does not leave any noticeable lump on the skin. These changes can also happen because of non-cancerous conditions, so they do not automatically mean cancer. They simply deserve medical evaluation. This generally happens when a person has the chances of inflammatory cancer.

3. An inverted or suddenly pulled-in nipple

There are a few women with inverted nipples. Having inverted nipples is not a problem unless and until you notice a new change.

It signifies that if your nipples were previously pointed outwards and now it has pulled inwards or became flattened or changed direction, then the woman should immediately consult with a medical professional.

4. Nipple discharge when you are not breastfeeding

There are many reasons that can lead to nipple discharge. Benign breast conditions, medications, and hormonal changes can also cause nipple discharge.

But if you are experiencing a bloody discharge or even plane discharge from a single nipple, then it should not be ignored and it should be evaluated as soon as possible. Moreover, it is also not important that the discharge has to come with a lump. Discharge and nipple discharge sometimes present cancer without an obvious mass.

5. Persistent redness, itching or flaky skin around the nipple

A dermatitis or an allergy also makes flaky and itchy nipples. But persistent itching, thickening, crusting, scaling, and redness around areola or nipple can be associated with Paget disease of the breast. It is a rare form of breast cancer that can look like common skin conditions.

However, it is not wise to create panic over every itchy nipple. If unusual or persistent changes are reported, then only a healthcare professional should be contacted.

6. Thickening or Swelling without a lump

It is not true that every breast cancer feels like a lump on the skin. A few women can also report swelling, firmness, and thickening of skin. It can make breasts look different and heavier even when there is no visible lump under the skin. Hence, women should also report for thickening and swelling of skin while assessing breast cancer.

7. Pain, especially when it is unusual or persistent

It is very important to note that breast cancer does not cause much pain in its early stages. Hence, expecting pain when it will increase is not a wise idea while assessing breast cancer.

However, if the nipple pain or unusual breast changes accompanied by any other breast change is persistent, then women should immediately consult a doctor. But no breast pain doesn’t immediately mean cancer. There are various benign conditions, cysts, and hormonal changes that can cause breast pain.

Hence, it can be concluded that the most important sign of threat is any unusual change. But breasts can also change with breastfeeding, pregnancy, and menstrual cycles and doesn’t signify cancer. It should also be kept in mind that sometimes breast cancer produces no symptoms at all. Hence, the factors like risk-appropriate and age-appropriate screening matters while detecting breast cancer.  A mammogram can detect some breast cancers before they are large enough to be felt or cause symptoms.

The message is to check every panic and sensation before it results into something else.

Know your breasts. Notice changes. And when something genuinely feels different, don't let the phrase “it’s probably nothing” be the final diagnosis.

This article is for awareness and does not replace medical evaluation. Most breast changes are caused by conditions other than cancer, but new or unusual changes should be discussed with a healthcare professional.
