Ejaculation problems, low libido, erectile
dysfunction, and even the testosterone misuse can be the reason behind
infertility. It can not only affect the ability of a man to conceive but it can
also become a core reason for an underlying health problem.
Whenever a couple starts thinking about family
planning, the fingers start pointing around women’s reproductive health,
pregnancy tests, age, periods and ovulation. But nobody discusses men's
sexual and reproductive health that contributes equally to any fertility
journey.
The statistics make this trend very hard to
ignore. According to WHO, there are 1 in 6 people who are at their reproductive
age experiences infertility during their lifetime. It become quiet important to
notice how infertility can be governed by
female as well as male factors and sometimes both of them.
The research by American Urological Society
and American Society of Reproductive Medicines also mentions that more than
half of infertile couples are affected because of male factors. The research
also suggested that if male evaluation is not done properly, it can push women
towards an unnecessary and invasive fertility treatment.
That’s why, it becomes important that we talk
about men’s sexual health as loudly as we are talking about the female’s sexual
health. On this World Sexual and Reproductive Health Month, here are the
3 men’s sexual health issues that should never be ignored if they are planning
a family.
1.Erectile
Dysfunction:
Diagnosing Erection Issues
Erectile Dysfunction (ED) is considered more
as only a bedroom issue. The less ability of male to maintain and achieve an
erection affects the chances of couples who are trying to conceive a baby
naturally. It can rise to become even a greater issue if men don’t realise it
at the right time.
As per Sage Journals, there are more than 30
million men that experience erectile dysfunction. The condition can also be
associated with psychological factors, different medications, hormonal
problems, cardiovascular issues, high blood pressure and obesity.
If this issue is persistent, the acceptance of
this fact or taking online supplements is not a wise idea. A proper medical
evaluation should be done no matter if the problem is because of any underlying
health condition, hormonal, or psychological. It is also very important for a
couple to diagnose this issue for better reproductive goals and sexual
wellbeing.
2. Ejaculation Problems: Struggling
to Conceive Despite Having Sperms
The fertility doesn’t depend only on the sperm
count. It also depends upon their ability to reach the reproductive tract.
There are certain ejaculatory disorders such as retrograde ejaculation,
inability to ejaculate, or delayed ejaculation experienced by men. For
instance, in retrograde ejaculation, the seekh travels backward into the
bladder instead of getting out from the penis. There are many medical
conditions, medications, previous surgeries or nerve damage that can contribute
to this issue.
The fact an ejaculation is supporting
conception or a person can ejaculate are both very different things. Only a
fertility specialist can identify whether semen is travelling to the
reproductive tract smoothly or not or there are any obstructions in the way. A
few causes of male infertility are treatable because of advanced treatments
taking over society.
3.
Low Libido and Testosterone Problems: Does More Testosterones Means More Fertility?
Low sexual desires are often the results of
hormonal conditions, sleep problems, depression, stress, previous medications
or relationship issues. When it comes to testosterone, it is one of the oldest
myths that needs to be challenged today. Many men undergo testosterone
treatment to improve fertility and boost masculinity.
But it doesn’t work like that. The
testosterone therapy is not recommended for men who are planning a family. The
external testosterone can suppress the hormonal signals that stimulate the
testes to produce speed. AUA/ASRM guidance also suggests that spermatogenesis
can be suppressed by exogenous testosterone and can also result in azoospermia,
a condition where no sperms remain in the ejaculation. This information
becomes very important when testosterone boosters like testosterone are heavily
sold online as well as offline. Self-medication can often result in serious
issues. Early diagnosis or clinical evaluation, again, is very important.
What
Not to Ignore on World Sexual and Reproductive Health Month?
Sexual performance has nothing to do with
men’s sexual health. It can be a window into overall health and reproductive
potential. Besides ejaculation issues and failing erection, there are many
sexually transmitted infections. (STIs) and sedentary lifestyle that can also
affect men’s fertility and the ability of the couples to conceive naturally.
Hence, it should be noted that blaming women for not conceiving a child is
wrong and that men’s fertility problems should be clinically evaluated at the
right time if the couple is looking forward to planning a healthy family. As a
society, we should make sure that the reproductive health is a two-person
conversation from the beginning.
